Common Aligner Pitfalls And How To Avoid Them
Inadequate Attachment And Accessory Use
Pitfalls:
Misuse or lack of attachments and other accessories can hinder the aligners’ ability to effectively move teeth.
Avoidance:
Ensure proper use of attachments, buttons, or elastics as prescribed. Review and adjust accessory placement as needed to enhance treatment efficacy.
Poor Communication With Laboratory
Pitfalls:
Errors in communication with the aligner laboratory can result in poorly fitting aligners or treatment inaccuracies.
Avoidance:
Communicate all treatment details and specifications to the laboratory. Review and verify digital impressions and treatment plans before finalizing.
Inadequate Patient Education
Pitfalls:
Patients may not fully understand the aligner treatment process, leading to improper use or expectations.
Avoidance:
Provide thorough patient education on aligner use, care, and the importance of compliance. Use visual aids, instructional videos, and written materials to reinforce key points.
Failure To Address Dental Hygiene
Pitfalls:
Poor oral hygiene can lead to plaque buildup and other dental issues during aligner treatment.
Avoidance:
Emphasize the importance of maintaining excellent oral hygiene. Provide guidance on cleaning both aligners and teeth, and offer recommendations for oral care products.
MINI-COURSE 1: COMPLETED
Understanding Aligner Treatment
Treatment Planning
Aligner Cases
Pitfalls:
Poorly designed treatment plans can lead to suboptimal results, with misalignment issues or incomplete correction.
Avoidance:
Use advanced digital planning tools and software to create a comprehensive treatment plan. Collaborate with experienced orthodontists to ensure thorough planning and accurate projections.
Ensuring Patient
Compliance
Pitfalls:
Aligners require consistent wear, typically 20-22 hours daily. Non-compliance can result in treatment delays or failure.
Avoidance:
Educate patients about the importance of wearing aligners as prescribed. Provide clear instructions and set up regular follow-up appointments to monitor compliance.
Monitoring Aligner
Treatment
Pitfalls:
Insufficient monitoring can lead to undetected issues or delays in treatment progress.
Avoidance:
Schedule regular check-ups to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments. Utilize digital tracking tools to keep an eye on treatment progress remotely.
Assessing Complex
Aligner Cases
Pitfalls:
Aligners may be less effective for complex malocclusions, such as severe skeletal discrepancies or significant tooth movements.
Avoidance:
Assess the complexity of the case before starting treatment. Consider alternative or supplementary treatments for cases that are beyond the scope of aligners alone.
